Some Abuja football enthusiasts on Friday expressed confidence in the ability of the national under-20 women team to win the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada on Sunday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria will take on Germany in the competition’s final match, after overcoming North Korea 6-2 in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
Germany had defeated France 2-1 to book a date with the Falconets.

The football enthusiasts told NAN that they were optimistic the Falconets would triumph over their German opponents in view of the Nigerian side’s performance so far.

A referee, Aminu Saliu, said the physical play of the Germans would not stop the Falconets from defeating them.

“Since the Falconets reached the final without tasting defeat, I believe they can go all the way to win the cup if they are not intimidated by Germany.

“They should continue with the same spirit they started with. The only weak link is the goalkeeper. I think that she needs as much help as she can get from the defenders,’’ he said.

Niyi Ajayi, an engineer, said the Falconets have been playing well since the beginning of the competition, and that this would serve them in good stead on Sunday.

“The good thing is that the goalscoring chances they create and their good ball possession are indications that they are always in control of their games.

“But they need to be more clinical in front of goal on Sunday. I am sure the technical crew has seen the lapses and will work on them before they face Germany,’’ he said.

Adegboye Richard, a civil servant, said the Falconets have done a good job so far in making Nigeria proud in the process, and would not disappoint when it mattered.

“I did not expect them to reach the final. It was their second time of reaching this stage and we need to encourage them to do more.

“I believe Nigeria are destined to win this competition. Even though the German team is resilient, the players can’t stand the Falconets,” Richard said.

NAN reports that the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup started on Aug. 5 and will end on Aug 24.(NAN)
